9 reasons to start growing plants indoors at home

Indoor plant cultivation is already a well-known method of cultivation abroad, and an increasing number of people in Slovenia are also choosing it.

To start, we don't need a large space or complicated equipment. A suitable corner in the apartment and the desire to grow something of our own at home are enough. Here are 9 reasons why indoor plant cultivation is becoming increasingly interesting in our country too.

In short:
Indoor cultivation allows for fresh homegrown produce all year round, even if we don't have a garden or much space. We can provide plants with more stable conditions, protect them from weather and pests, and learn through practice. To start, one tray, a few pots, or a small green corner is enough.

1. Homegrown produce all year round

The biggest advantage of indoor cultivation is that we are not dependent on seasons, temperatures, or bad weather. With appropriate space and suitable conditions, we can grow herbs, lettuce, microgreens, and other plants even in autumn and winter, when the outdoor growing season is over.

This means that gardening doesn't have to end when we clear the garden and when it gets too cold outside for plants. We can grow something fresh, green, and homegrown even in the colder months. Microgreens can grow on a tray, herbs and fruiting plants in pots, and seedlings can be prepared even before the start of spring.

Thus, gardening can become a part of our everyday life throughout the year, instead of a seasonal hobby.

2. Conditions in nature are increasingly unpredictable

Due to unusual weather conditions, outdoor gardening is becoming more difficult and unreliable. In recent years, we have been increasingly encountering long periods of drought, heavy rainfall, storms, hail, floods, and rapid temperature changes.

All of this can greatly affect our yield. The garden can thrive beautifully for weeks, but then be damaged in one day by a storm, hail, or frost.

With indoor cultivation, however, plants are protected from extreme weather and other unpredictable conditions. We can create a stable growing environment for them and reduce the risk of crop loss.

3. There are more and more pests and invasive species

In the garden, we often struggle with pests, diseases, and other problems. Snails, aphids, mites, caterpillars, and other pests can quickly damage our plants or crops.

Alien invasive species, which are successfully spreading in our environment, are also causing increasing problems. These can be plants, insects, or other pests that multiply rapidly, displace native species, and damage or destroy our garden plants.

In indoor spaces, such problems are generally much less common. We must ensure cleanliness, adequate ventilation, and regular observation of plants, as this prevents the development of pests.  Some may still appear occasionally, but they are easier to spot, and we can react more quickly.

4. We don't need a garden, digging, or raised beds

One of the biggest advantages of indoor cultivation is that we don't need a garden for it. We don't have to dig the soil, make beds, remove weeds, or monitor weather forecasts and wait for the right time to plant outside.

We can grow plants in pots, trays, or other planting containers, which we place on a shelf, cabinet, in a grow tent, or in a special home corner. This can be in the living room, kitchen, basement, garage, or attic.

This is especially practical for people who live in apartments, don't have a balcony, or have too little outdoor space. Even a small kitchen shelf can be enough for herbs or microgreens.

5. The crop is protected from unwanted visitors

In the garden, it quickly happens that snails, birds, cats, deer, or other animals attack our crop. Sometimes our crop can also disappear due to people, especially if the garden is in a more open or shared location.

With indoor cultivation, the crop is completely protected. Plants are at home, under our control, so there are no hungry animals or curious passers-by who could claim our eagerly awaited crop.

6. Fresh plants always at your fingertips

Fresh herbs, leafy greens, homegrown mushrooms or fruits like strawberries, tomatoes, chilies, and peppers can always be at your fingertips.

With fruiting plants, it's particularly interesting that we can follow the entire development of the plant, from flowering to the first fruits and the final harvest. Once the first tomatoes, strawberries, or chilies start to ripen on the plant, the home green corner quickly becomes something we look forward to seeing every day.

Fresh basil, mint, parsley, chives,... can quickly improve the taste of dishes and bring more freshness to the kitchen. Instead of buying a whole bunch of greens that then wilt in the refrigerator, we can cut only as much as we need.

7. A good start to self-sufficiency

Indoor cultivation does not mean that we will produce all the food we need at home. However, it is an excellent first step towards greater self-sufficiency.

We can start with small, useful things: microgreens, herbs, sprouts, or seedlings. Even if the yield is small, it has great value because we grow it ourselves and can use it immediately.

Over time, we can upgrade our home green corner. We can add more plants, appropriate grow lights, larger trays, a grow tent, or a more organized growing system.

8. It is also suitable for beginners

We don't need gardening experience for indoor cultivation. A complete beginner can learn a lot if they start with plants that are simple and show results quickly.

A beginner's kit for growing mushrooms or microgreens is one of the easiest starts because they grow quickly and don't require much space. Herbs are practical because they can be used in cooking. Seedlings are a good choice for anyone who also wants to plant outdoors later.

It's important not to start too big. It's better to start with one tray or a few pots and learn and upgrade as you go.

9. We learn best through practice

When we have plants at home, we can observe them every day. We quickly see if they lack light, if we water them too much or too little, if they have enough space, and if they are progressing well.

This is the easiest way to learn how plants grow and what they need. No guide can replace or compare to what we gain from caring for and nurturing plants.

Mistakes are part of learning. If something doesn't work out immediately, it doesn't mean that gardening isn't for us. With every mistake or success, we learn something new. As the old proverb says: a beautiful tree grows slowly.

If you want to start from scratch, you can also read the guide How to properly germinate seeds, which presents two simple methods of germination and the first steps in growing young seedlings. When choosing a growing method, the guide Soil, coco, or hydroponics, which presents the main differences between the three types of substrates, can help you.

So why start?

Because indoor cultivation allows us to bring gardening into our home and adapt it to our lifestyle. We don't have to wait for spring, have a large garden, or rely on the weather. We can start in a small space and gradually figure out what suits us best.

Home cultivation gives us more control, more freshness, and more contact with plants. When we have them close, we can observe, care for, and understand them more easily. Over time, we gain not only a crop but also rich knowledge that stays with us.

The best beginning is not a perfect system, but the first attempt. One plant, one corner, and a little regular attention are enough to start getting to know the wonderful world of home cultivation.

Pogosta vprašanja o osnovni opremi za notranje gojenje

Kaj potrebujem za osnovno notranje gojenje rastlin?

Za preprost začetek potrebujemo primeren prostor, lonce ali pladnje, substrat, semena oziroma sadike in možnost zalivanja. Če naravne svetlobe ni dovolj, dodamo rastno luč in časovnik.

Posamezne dele izbiramo sami predvsem takrat, ko želimo bolj prilagojeno postavitev.
