Basic indoor growing equipment: what do we need to get started?

For indoor plant cultivation, we don't necessarily need a large space or a complex system. With some basic equipment, we can grow herbs, microgreens, seedlings, lettuce, strawberries, chili peppers, and many other plants at home.
The equipment we'll need depends primarily on the space available, the type of plants, and our goals. Some plants can successfully grow on a bright windowsill, while year-round cultivation or growing fruiting plants will require a grow light and more controlled conditions.
In this guide, we will introduce the main pieces of equipment and explain what is truly necessary to start and what can be added later.
In brief:
For basic indoor cultivation, we need a suitable space, sufficient light, pots or trays, appropriate substrate, and the ability to monitor temperature and humidity. When growing in a grow tent, we also need ventilation and air circulation. It's best to start with a simple setup tailored to the plants you wish to grow.
1. First, choose a suitable space
Before purchasing equipment, we must determine where the plants will grow. This could be a windowsill, kitchen counter, shelf, cupboard, basement, garage, or a dedicated grow tent.
When choosing a space, check:

what the room temperature is

if the space can be adequately ventilated

if light and noise from the equipment will bother you

how easy it will be to access the plants
For a few herbs or a tray of microgreens, a small shelf might be enough. For larger plants, such as tomatoes, peppers, or chili peppers, you'll need more height, stronger light, and enough space for the canopy.
It's a good idea to measure the width, depth, and height of the available space before purchasing. Also, consider the space that pots, lights, fans, and other equipment will occupy.
2. Grow tent or open corner?
Plants can be grown in an open space or a grow tent. Both options have their advantages.
An open setup is simple and suitable for a smaller number of plants. It works well for seedlings, herbs, and microgreens, especially if they are placed on a shelf with a grow light. It can be cheaper to start with, but you have slightly less control over light, temperature, and humidity.
A grow tent creates a separate environment where conditions can be more easily controlled. Its reflective interior surfaces help utilize light better, and the structure allows for the installation of lights, fans, and other equipment.
Choose the size of the tent based on:

For a few smaller plants, a 60 × 60 cm tent might be sufficient. Sizes like 80 × 80 cm, 100 × 100 cm, or 120 × 120 cm allow for more plants but also require stronger lights and more powerful ventilation.
When choosing, don't just look at the surface area. Height is also important, as there must be adequate distances between the pot, the plant, and the light.
3. Grow light
Light is one of the most important conditions for healthy growth. If natural light is insufficient, plants begin to stretch, stems become weak, and growth slows down.
Ordinary household bulbs are generally not suitable for serious plant cultivation. Modern LED grow lights emit light tailored to the needs of plants, while consuming less energy and generating less heat than older systems.
When choosing a light, consider:

Seedlings, herbs, and leafy vegetables require less light than flowering and fruiting plants. Tomatoes, peppers, chili peppers, and strawberries need stronger and more uniform lighting for good flowering and fruit development.
The biggest mistake is buying a light based solely on wattage. It is also important how efficiently the light converts energy into light and how evenly it distributes it over the growing surface.
Always follow the manufacturer's recommendations regarding distance and power settings. Too weak light causes plants to stretch, while too strong or too closely positioned light can cause fading, curling, or damage to leaves.
4. Timer for automatic light switching
Plants need a regular rhythm of light and darkness. Instead of daily manual switching on and off, you can use a simple timer.
This automatically turns the grow light on and off at a set time. This way, plants have the same light cycle every day, even when you're not home.
The duration of lighting depends on the plant type and developmental stage. Many herbs, seedlings, and leafy greens thrive with approximately 14 to 18 hours of light daily, but it's always wise to check the specific needs of each plant.
For more powerful electrical equipment, you need to choose a quality timer with an adequate allowed load. Do not connect larger lights or multiple devices to unsuitable power strips.
5. Ventilation and air circulation
Fresh air helps plants with photosynthesis, and air movement strengthens stems and reduces moisture retention on leaves. Without proper ventilation, temperature and air humidity can quickly rise in an enclosed space, increasing the risk of mold and other problems.
In an open setup, regular room ventilation and a small fan gently moving air around the plants might be sufficient.
In a closed tent, you typically need:

an opening or fresh air intake

an oscillating fan for air circulation

flexible ducting for air exhaust

a carbon filter as needed to reduce odors
The capacity of the ventilation system for indoor growing must be adapted to the tent's volume, room temperature, light power, duct length, and filter use. Long ducts, sharp bends, and a carbon filter reduce actual airflow, so don't choose a fan based solely on the tent's basic volume.
An oscillating fan should not blow strongly directly at one plant all the time. The goal is gentle leaf movement and more uniform air circulation throughout the space.
6. Pots, trays, and saucers
The choice of container depends on the size of the plant and the growing method. Seedlings and microgreens can be grown in smaller pots or trays, while larger plants need enough volume for root development.
For traditional growing, you typically need:

Good pots have drainage holes for excess water. If water remains around the roots, oxygen can run out, leading to slower growth and root rot.
Don't choose the pot size solely based on the current seedling size. Also consider how large the plant will become. A pot that is too small limits root development and requires more frequent watering, while a pot that is too large for a tiny seedling can retain moisture for too long.
Choose appropriate pots, trays, and saucers that fit the space and allow for easy watering and maintaining cleanliness.
7. Choosing a substrate
The substrate provides roots with support, air, water, and, in some mixtures, initial nutrients. The most common options among substrates for home growing are soil, coco coir, and various hydroponic systems.
Soil
Quality soil is the simplest choice for most beginners. It retains water and nutrients for some time and forgives minor mistakes in watering or feeding.
For seeds and very young seedlings, choose a light substrate with fewer nutrients. Heavily fertilized soil can be too strong for delicate young roots.
Coco Coir
Coco coir fibers are airy and drain excess water well. They allow more control over feeding but contain almost no inherent nutrients. Therefore, you must provide plants with an appropriate nutrient solution early on and monitor pH.
Hydroponics
In hydroponics, plants grow without traditional soil. Roots receive water, oxygen, and precisely measured nutrients. This method allows for a lot of control but requires more knowledge, regular system monitoring, and more precise measurements.

8. Fertilizers and supplements
Plants need essential nutrients for growth, primarily nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium, as well as other macro and micronutrients.
The amount and type of fertilizer depend on:

the amount of nutrients already present in the substrate
When growing in fertilized soil, nutrient addition usually does not start immediately. First, check the substrate manufacturer's instructions and observe the plants. With coco coir and hydroponics, however, nutrients must be added more regularly and intentionally.
For starters, a suitable basic plant fertilizer is usually sufficient. Many supplements can be beneficial but are not a substitute for proper light, watering, temperature, and basic nutrition.
Start with a smaller dose than the upper limit recommended on the packaging and monitor the plants' response. Too much fertilizer can damage roots and cause burned leaf tips, while nutrient deficiency is often observed as fading, yellowing, or slower growth.
9. Measuring temperature and relative humidity
For basic environmental control, you need a thermometer and a hygrometer. The most practical is a combined device that displays both data and remembers the lowest and highest measured values.
Suitable conditions are not the same for all plants. Young seedlings often prefer slightly higher humidity, while for dense and mature plants, it's important that humidity is not too high and that air circulates well.
Do not place the meter directly under the light, in front of a fan, or next to a humidifier. Position it approximately at canopy height, where it will best indicate the conditions experienced by the plants.
For most simple setups, monitoring temperature and humidity is sufficient to start. A humidifier, dehumidifier, or heater should only be added if measurements show they are actually needed.
10. pH and EC meters
pH tells us how acidic or basic the water or nutrient solution is. If the pH is unsuitable, the plant cannot properly absorb certain nutrients, even when they are present in the substrate.
EC shows the amount of dissolved mineral salts in the nutrient solution and helps us estimate its concentration.
For simple growing in quality soil, pH and EC meters are not always essential on day one. They become much more important when growing in coco coir and hydroponics, where you have more direct control over nutrient delivery.
If using digital meters, they must be properly calibrated, cleaned, and stored according to the manufacturer's instructions. A poorly maintained meter can show incorrect values and cause more problems than it solves.
11. Tools to make work easier
In addition to the main equipment, some basic plant growing tools will be useful for daily care:

When to choose a ready-made kit?
A ready-made kit for starting indoor growing is suitable for anyone who doesn't want to choose each piece of equipment separately. It usually contains coordinated basic components, such as a tent, light, and ventilation.
Before purchasing, check what is included. Some kits do not contain pots, substrate, a timer, an oscillating fan, or a temperature and humidity meter.
A kit is a good choice if it fits the space and the plants you want to grow. However, not every kit is suitable for every purpose. Equipment for seedlings and herbs can be significantly less powerful than a setup for larger flowering or fruiting plants.
Most common mistakes when choosing equipment
Beginners often buy too much equipment or choose individual parts without considering the entire setup. Among the most common mistakes are:

Start simple
Successful indoor growing doesn't require the most expensive equipment or a fully automated system. Much more important is that the basic components are properly coordinated and adapted to the plants.
You can start with one tray of microgreens, a few pots of herbs, or a small setup under a grow light. Once you understand the plants' response and learn to manage watering, light, and feeding, you can gradually upgrade the system.
